Every custom shaft we sell at Bunker Ball Golf is built by hand at our Sandringham workshop before it leaves for you. No shaft goes out the door pre-built off a shelf. You choose your specs, we build it to those specs, and it arrives ready to drop straight into your club. That process takes care, attention to detail, and a consistent methodology that produces the same quality result every time.

Your Options When You Order

When you place a shaft order with us, you are not just buying a raw shaft and hoping for the best. You are making a set of choices that we then build into the finished product. The options you select are:

Priority and Standard Orders

When orders come into the workshop each morning, the first thing we do is separate them into two queues. Express Priority orders are taken first, processed at the start of the day before anything else moves. Standard orders are still handled the same day they are queued and go through the same build process, just sequenced after the priority work is done.

If you have a tournament coming up, a club fitting booked, or just need your shaft quickly, selecting the Priority build option when you order is the way to make sure your build jumps the queue.

The Build Process, Step by Step

Step 1: Sanding the Shaft Tip

The first thing that happens once your shaft is pulled for the build is that the tip gets sanded down. The tip of the shaft is the end that inserts into the adapter or hosel, and sanding it prepares the surface for a proper bond with the epoxy that secures the adapter in place. Skipping this step or doing it poorly is one of the most common causes of adapter wobble or failure down the track. We do not skip it.

Step 2: Fitting the Adapter

Once the tip is prepped, we epoxy and fit your chosen adapter onto the shaft tip. This is a precise process and the positioning of the adapter relative to the shaft matters more than most people realise.

As a standard part of our build process, we orient the adapter so that when the shaft is inserted into your club head and the head is soled at address, the shaft logo is not sitting in your line of sight. It sounds like a small thing but it is the kind of detail that separates a properly built shaft from one that was just glued together and sent out. Nobody wants to be staring at a brand name stamped across their shaft every time they set up over the ball. We position it so you do not have to think about it.

Once the epoxy has cured and the adapter is set, the shaft moves to the next stage.

Step 3: Understanding Playing Length

Before we cut the shaft, it helps to understand what playing length actually means, because it is not the same as the raw length of the shaft.

Playing length is the length of the finished club as it will measure when the head is soled at address, from the ground up to the top of the grip. This is the number that matters for your swing. A driver playing at 45 inches, for example, is a club that measures 45 inches from sole to grip end when properly assembled.

The reason this matters for the build is that the raw shaft needs to be cut shorter than the target playing length to account for two things that add height to the finished club:

• The grip: Installing a grip adds length at the top of the shaft. The butt cap of the grip extends slightly beyond where the raw shaft ends.

• The head height: When the adapter is inserted into the hosel of the club head and the head is soled at address, the crown of the driver head sits above the ground. This raises the effective measurement point at the lower end of the club.

Combined, these two factors add approximately 1.25 inches to the finished playing length compared to where the raw shaft is cut. So when we are building a shaft to play at 45 inches, we cut the raw shaft to 43.75 inches. When the grip goes on and the head goes in, the finished club measures exactly 45 inches at playing length.

Getting this calculation wrong is how you end up with a driver that plays half an inch longer than you ordered. We measure twice and cut once.

Step 4: Cutting the Shaft

With the playing length calculated, we cut the shaft to the correct raw length using a shaft cutter. Driver and fairway wood shafts are always cut from the butt end, not the tip, which preserves the tip stiffness profile of the shaft. Cutting from the tip changes the flex characteristics of the shaft, and not in a predictable way. Butt trimming is the correct method and is how we do it across all builds.

After cutting, the butt end is cleaned up and any rough edges are tidied before the grip goes on.

Step 5: Grip Installation

The grip you selected when you ordered is now installed on the butt end of the shaft. We use grip tape and solvent to secure the grip, ensuring it is seated flush, straight, and at the correct alignment. If you have opted for an alignment grip like the Golf Pride Align series, this step is particularly important as the ridge needs to sit in exactly the right position relative to the face angle.

Once the grip is on, the shaft is set aside to allow the solvent to fully evaporate and the grip to set firmly in place before it goes into packaging.

Step 6: Quality Check and Packaging

Before anything is packaged, the finished shaft goes through a final check. We confirm the adapter is properly set and correctly oriented, the length is accurate, the grip is seated cleanly, and the overall finish is what we would expect to receive ourselves. If something is not right at this point, it gets fixed before it leaves the workshop. Full stop.

Once it passes the check, a protective sleeve goes over the shaft to prevent any surface marks or scratches during transit. The shaft is then wrapped in bubble wrap and packed securely for dispatch. We take the packaging seriously because a shaft that arrives dinged or scratched is not the result we are after, regardless of how well it was built.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is playing length and why does it matter?

Playing length is the length of your club as it measures from the ground to the top of the grip when the head is soled at address. It is the real-world measurement that affects how the club fits your swing and your posture over the ball. A driver playing at 45 inches versus 45.5 inches changes your setup and swing dynamics more than most golfers realise. We build to your specified playing length, not to a raw shaft length, to make sure what you get is what you asked for.

Can I order a shaft without a grip and install it myself?

Yes. If you prefer to install your own grip, just let us know at the time of ordering and we will build the shaft with adapter only, cut to the appropriate raw length for your specified playing length. Keep in mind the raw cut length will be approximately 1.25 inches shorter than your target playing length, so factor that in when you install the grip.

What is the difference between Priority and Standard builds?

Priority builds are taken first at the start of each workshop day before standard orders are processed. If you have a specific deadline, a tournament, or just need the shaft quickly, selecting Priority at the time of ordering ensures your build goes to the front of the queue.

Does cutting the shaft from the butt end affect the flex?

Minimal trimming from the butt has a very small stiffening effect, but nothing that would meaningfully change the flex profile of the shaft. Tip trimming, on the other hand, significantly stiffens the tip section and changes how the shaft performs. We always cut driver and fairway wood shafts from the butt to preserve the intended flex characteristics of the shaft.

Why is the shaft logo positioned away from address?

It is a detail that makes a difference to the look and feel of the club at address. Having a logo sitting in your line of sight as you set up is a subtle but real distraction. We orient every adapter during the build so that when the shaft is inserted and the head is soled, the logo is sitting out of view. It is just the right way to finish a shaft build.

Can you build shafts for older or less common adapter types?

Do you offer regripping on existing shafts?

Yes. We offer a regripping service from our Sandringham workshop by appointment. If your shafts are already built and you just need new grips, get in touch and we will work out the best way to handle it.
